The Catherine Wheel

Our story

An inn with a long memory

The Catherine Wheel has stood on Marshfield’s High Street for more than three centuries.

A short history

Three centuries on the High Street

1680

A new front for an older house

The facade and front rooms we still use today were built in 1680, as an addition to a house already many years older.

By 1740

The coaching inn

By 1740 the building had become a coaching inn, though the precise date is unknown. It went by a different name then: The Star.

1780s

The Star becomes The Catherine Wheel

In the 1780s the inn took the name it has carried ever since.

2022

A 21st birthday party

We marked 21 years with a bank holiday party of BBQ burgers, live music and DJ Liam. What an amazing party we had.

Today

Still open, still feeding people

A free house with food and rooms, real ales, a monthly music night and a warm welcome for dogs.

Looking up at the inn sign and summer flower baskets on the front of the building
The village

Marshfield

A historic conservation village and a thriving community, close to where Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Somerset meet.

It stands at the southern gateway to the Cotswold hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, eight miles from the Roman city of Bath. It’s also home to the world-famous Marshfield Mummers, who finish their Boxing Day plays right outside our door.

“The village of Marshfield must be one of the hidden gems of the Cotswold… it certainly spoke to me as more authentic than any other village I visited.”
